課程概述

Contemporary media theory has come along to recast the terms of conversations in the humanities, urging us to rethink the interrelations between technical media (or technicity in general) and the human condition. While these reconsiderations are posing important questions concerning technical media in their own right, they have also inspired new methodologies in literary studies. This course aims to examine how these theoretical propositions help us revise the ways in which literature embodies or responds to epistemic frameworks and changes in the physical world. Literary works are not to be taken merely as thematic clusters or representations of political ideologies and identitarian alignments; they are to be understood as complex intersections of the textual world and the world beyond, as material manifestation of processes of mediation. The current development in media theory is illuminating particularly in helping us broach “medium” broadly, allowing us to approach critically and innovatively not only media technologies but also all sorts of “medial objects.” In brief, this course is interested in the technically mediated experience manifest in literature.

課程要求
1. Preparation, attendance, and class participation.

2. Two sessions of “discussion facilitation.” Sign up for two sessions of discussion facilitation and prepare discussion questions on the reading materials of the week. Discussion facilitation is not meant to be an oral presentation where you summarize the reading. Rather, you should raise questions about parts of the reading you find noteworthy. Make hard copies of your questions for the class. Length requirement for each question sheet: 250-400 words.

3. Term paper. Word count (not including notes and bibliography): 3,500 words minimum for M.A. students; 5,000 words minimum for Ph.D. students. An abstract of 250-400 words is due in Week 15; an individual meeting with the instructor will be scheduled for Week 16.
